MARINE CENTRE WALES

The Marine Centre Wales (MCW) is due for completion in early 2015 as part of the SEACAMS project. The new Centre will be located in Menai Bridge, on Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences site.

The new facility will facilitate academia-industry collaboration in the marine and coastal commercial sector in Wales, providing the intellectual, technical and practical infrastructure for this purpose. Businesses will have access to expertise, laboratory and ship facilities, and space for new collaborative projects. The Centre will also be a focus for research/business workshops and conferences which will facilitate ongoing collaborative projects, generate new projects and provide a centre for the marine sector in Wales, and raise the profile of Wales as an international hub in the sector.

As part of SEACAMS the MCW will have a high design quality and be environmentally sustainable. The Innovation Centre development will be of BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment Method) excellent standard in keeping with an environmental facility, meeting demanding criteria to minimise environmental impact during construction and to ensure environmental sustainability.

The new building will be 1650m², accommodating existing staff and providing hot desking facilities to accommodate up to 10 businesses working with us on Research and Development projects.

The character of the building will be determined by the materials it is made from and the texture and grain of the facade. It has been designed with a contemporary and sympathetic response to its environment. The general arrangement takes inspiration from the bivalve marine life studied by the scientists within the School. This creates two wings oriented to allow vistas to give connection to the environment from within the building and an open aspect to welcome visitors.
